 Gunpowder Trail

Unearthing the curious remains of Glyn-neath Gunpowder Works, this flat route along a former tramroad weaves its way beneath the craggy sides of the Mellte gorge.

Difficulty (1 is easy - 3 hard)
Wow factor (1 is pleasant – 5 is spectacular)
Crowds (1 is least and 5 is busiest)

Start your walk from Craig y Ddinas car park, carefully cross back over the narrow road bridge and keep right following the track past the Village Hall and alongside the River Mellte.

Now a secluded and quiet walk this was once a busy, noisy and potentially dangerous industrial site producing gunpowder, playing a key part in the Industrialisation of South Wales. The Gunpowder Works were entirely powered by water using an ingenious combination of leats and turbines. You can spot many of their remains today.  If you have more time why not explore one of the circular walks with optional loops shown on the map.
