Craig-y-Nos circular – directions
Way to go
Leave the car park via the Fish Pond, following the path to the right to cross the wooden bridge below the junction of two rivers. Follow the river upstream. Leave the Country Park by crossing the river bridge. Pass along a waymarked path, over another stile and past another pond on your right until you reach the main road. If you’re visiting Dan-yr-Ogof’s showcaves, cross the road, head over a stile and up the field to the cave car park.
Head downhill and follow the metalled road along the hillside towards the camping and caravan site. A signposted track leads left and uphill to a stile at the sheep enclosure. Continue along the track to the river gorge. Descend steeply to your right and cross the river using the stepping stones. Exercise great caution crossing the river here as it can be hazardous (when the river is in full spate, the stepping stones may be impassable). Go through a gate and follow the well-trodden path turning south-east skirting scrubby woodland. Continue past the farmhouse to the main road and turn left. The grass verge is wide here and you will only be walking on the main road for a short distance. To your right on a large loop of old road is the Gwyn Arms.
Cross the Tawe bridge and walk on to St Callwen’s Church. Go through the kissing gate and walk around the back of the church to another kissing gate. Cross the lane to a third kissing gate, before walking straight ahead along an old field boundary and through another gate. Go through and cross the field diagonally towards the hamlet of Callwen. Turn left onto a minor road through the houses and down to a bridge. Cross and walk uphill for about 25m to a kissing gate on your right. Go through the gate and follow the Beacons Way markers back to Craig-y-Nos Country Park.
On the way back you can take in some lovely views across the valley to Dan-yr-Ogof, its limestone outcrops clear to see. A gate ont he right of the path lets you re-enter the Country Park. Follow the river to the wooden bridge and back to your starting point.
