A walk on the Black Mountain - directions
Way to go
Turn left out of the gate and down the twisting A4069 for a short distance before turning right into Heol y Cwar/Quarry Road. At the top continue along a path through the woodland to a series of steps and the now overgrown quarry (keep away from the steep faces which are loose in places). Continue up the path through the gorge cut by the Nant Melyn.
Emerge from the woodland onto the open moor and head left for the new footbridge over the stream to the old sheepfolds, used to hold sheep ready for washing in the stream.
Retrace your steps back up from the bridge and up the grassy slope. Then follow a sometimes indistinct path across the hillside (with the moorland edge just down to your right) and past the house on the moor to the A4069 road at a waterworks. Turn left when you reach the road near the cattle grid and follow it for 150m.
Turn right down a track off the road at a second, smaller waterworks. After 150m turn right again down a concrete path to a footbridge over the Nant Garw. Climb the track from the footbridge to the top and continue to a cattle grid.
In 50m after the cattle grid turn right down a track and follow it down as it narrows past the houses to the first of several kissing gates. The path drops down, crosses the front of a house and recrosses the Nant Garw to a track. Turn left here and follow it down to the A4068 road just west of Pont Cwmgarw.
Cross the road and enter a field through a kissing gate, keeping to a path that soon follows the route of the old London Midland Railway, a line that serviced the tin, iron and brick works that once stood here. Keep walking until you reach a footbridge to your left across the river Amman. Cross the bridge to get a better view of its rocky bed and banks.
Stop at this point and retrace your steps over the bridge, then bear left through a kissing gate to follow the small stream up through a shaded hollow. At the top of the rise pass through a kissing gate, bear left and arrive back at the A4068 road, where you turn left for the Black Mountain Centre.
